Traditional painters were confined to the academic style of painting. They were used to combining different colors to create the hue they want to apply on the canvas. Their main subject revolved around still life, portraits and landscapes, but all of these were created indoors. But all of these traditions were broken by the advent of the impressionism art movement in the 19th century. Impressionist oil paintings depicted styles, subjects, colors, and strokes that were too modern that it took about 30 years or so for them to be appreciated. The impressionist paintings showcased short, thin strokes were used to capture the subject, rather than the details. Colors were applied side by side with little mixing and little use of black. Grays and other dark hues were created by mixing complementary colors. Successive applications of paint were used without waiting for the wet paint to dry, which produced softer edges. Painters played with natural light and frequently depicted outdoors landscapes and candid sceneries. Today, impressionism is regarded as an art movement that paved the way for modern art.
